The lake at Santa Clara is located in the Alentejo, in the district of Beja, near to Ourique and Odemira. It is about 30km from the coast, 100km from Faro in the south and 230km from Lisbon. It was formed when a dam was placed in the Mira river, near the small village of Santa Clara-a-Velha.
Created to provide a source of irrigation, the lake has become one of the best-protected areas of water in Portugal, on account of its exceptional climatic conditions, water quality and natural beauty. All around the lake are to be found hills and valleys of extraordinary beauty, part of a typically rich, Mediterranean-type ecosystem. Here, among the pines, spruces and scented eucalyptus trees, are hidden walks and little-known tracks leading down to the water’s shore.

Situada no rio Mira, concelho de Odemira, a barragem de Santa Clara foi, em tempos, a maior barragem portuguesa. Inaugurada a 11 de Maio de 1969, pelo Professor Marcelo Caetano, foi construída com o objectivo de regadio para todo o concelho, tendo assim um forte impacto nos sectores da agricultura e da agro-indústria. Dispõe de uma bacia hidrográfica com uma área aproximada de 520 Km2, que serve uma albufeira com uma capacidade total de 485.000.000 m3.

HOW TO GET HERE
Directions by car:
From the SOUTH, leave the A2 motorway at the junction for Messines and take the IP1 road north in the direction of São Marcos da Serra.
Turn right into São Marcos da Serra, go over the bridge in the direction of Monchique.
After about 4 miles, you will come to a junction. Here, take the right turning to Nave Redonda. When you get there, turn right again to Sabóia.
After a few miles, you will arrive at the turning for Sabóia — but simply head straight on to Santa Clara-a-Velha.
IF YOU WANT US TO PICK YOU UP BY BOAT
Just before you arrive at Santa Clara-a-Velha, you must take a right turn to the lake — you will see a sign for “Pousada”.
After about 4 km, you will arrive at Barragem de Santa Clara. You will see the boat moored a little way out. From this we will come and pick you up in a dingy.
IF YOU WANT TO BRING YOUR CAR
Pass by the village and, 500m after, turn right towards Corte Brique / Cortes Pereiras.
Then, 8 to 9 Km ahead, Cortes Pereiras direction, you will find a earth road on your right.
Then you must follow a map we will email you. It`s a 5km road.
From the NORTH, leave the A2 motorway at the junction for Ourique and take the IP2 road to Ourique. At the end of the road, turn left onto the IP1 in the direction of the south.
After 1km you will pass under a bridge, where you should follow the signs in the direction of Odemira/Garvão.
After 10 km you will arrive at Garvão, turn left towards Amoreiras. After about Xkm, you will reach the turning for Amoreiras — but simply head straight on until you arrive in São Martinho das Amoreiras.
From here you just have to follow the signs to Portimão/Santa Clara-a-Velha. You will pass throw Luzianes and, just after a bridge, turn left to Santa Clara-a-Velha.
IF YOU WANT US TO PICK YOU UP BY BOAT
Pass by the village and, 500m after, turn left towards Barragem de Santa Clara.

Perto do litoral alentejano e do Algarve, a 230 km de Lisboa, a barragem é hoje considerada um dos mais fortes pontos turísticos da zona, estando uma parte localizada na freguesia de Santa Clara-a-Velha.
Enquadrada por cerros arredondados, cobertos de estevas e de verde, e margens arborizadas é um lugar obrigatório para todos os que procuram fugir ao bulício das grandes cidades, aos compromissos e às rotinas diárias. Um pequeno paraíso onde o silêncio e a placidez das águas convidam ao descanso e à comunhão com a natureza. Um lago imenso, polvilhado por ilhéus, onde a paisagem se reflecte e se desdobra a céu aberto.
Se vem de automóvel
Se vem do Algarve apanhe o IP1 em direcção a Lisboa, São Marcos da Serra.
Vire à direita para São Marcos da Serra, passe por cima do viaduto que atravessa o IP1 e siga em direcção a Monchique.
A cerca de 5km irá encontrar um entroncamento, onde deverá virar à direita em direcção à Nave Redonda. Siga por essa estrada até à Nave Redonda. Quando chegar vire à direita em direcção Sabóia.
Após alguns kms encontrará o entroncamento para Sabóia, mas deverá seguir em frente para Santa Clara-a-Velha. Antes de entrar na localidade e de passar a ponte, deverá virar à direita seguindo a sinalização “Pousada” e “Barragem”.
Depois de 4km chegará ao paredão da barragem onde avistará o barco Água Moura à sua espera, um pouco afastado da margem. Nessa altura iremos buscá-lo no nosso barco de apoio.
Se vem do norte, apanhe a auto estrada A2 e saia no quilometro 178, saída Ourique. Apanhe depois o IP2 em direcção a Ourique. Quando chegar ao fim do IP2, vire à esquerda para o IP1, em direcção sul.
Depois de cerca de 1 km passará por baixo de um viaduto, onde imediatamente a seguir deverá virar à direita seguindo os sinais Odemira/Garvão. Faça a curva e no final vire à esquerda no mesmo sentido.
Ao chegar ao Garvão vire à esquerda no sentido Amoreiras. Passe pela aldeia das Amoreiras sem sair da estrada, até chegar a São Martinho das Amoreiras. Aí só tem de seguir os sinais “Portimão/Santa Clara-a-Velha”.
Passe pela aldeia de Santa Clara-a-Velha sem entrar, atravesse a ponte sobre o rio Mira e vire à esquerda logo a seguir, no sentido “Barragem de Santa Clara”.
Depois de 4km chegará ao paredão da barragem onde avistará o barco Água Moura à sua espera, um pouco afastado da margem. Nessa altura iremos buscá-lo no nosso barco de apoio.
